Prof. Xiaofeng Wang Wins ACM SIGSAC Vice Chair Election

Professor XiaoFeng Wang has won the 2017 Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) SIGSA Vice-Chair election and will now sit as vice chair until June 2019. Professor Wang ran against Patrick Traynor of the University of Florida. The election results were announced last month by the ACM.

The ACM is an organization bringing together professionals, researchers and educators in a multidisciplinary effort to build better leadership, standards, and excellence. As it describes itself on the acm.org website:

ACM brings together computing educators, researchers, and professionals to inspire dialogue, share resources, and address the field’s challenges. As the world’s largest computing society, ACM strengthens the profession’s collective voice through strong leadership, promotion of the highest standards, and recognition of technical excellence. ACM supports the professional growth of its members by providing opportunities for life‐long learning, career development, and professional networking.

The organization has been in existence as long as there have been computers and its reach is international. A volunteer organization, ACM works to develop future leaders and offers $1.5 million in scholarships. It places a strong emphasis on diversity with a focus on bringing in students from all backgrounds and works to close racial and gender gaps in opportunities in education, research, and work.

In his electoral statement, Professor Wang made clear the importance that the ACM has made in his own career:

It is my great pleasure to run for SIGSAC Vice-Chair. SIGSAC plays a critical role in my career development. I still remember my first CCS paper in 2004. Now, it is the time for me to pay back, offering my service to the SIGSAC community and helping it move to the next level.

With Professor Wang’s election, and the hard work and dedication he will bring to this position – we expect that the ACM will grow in their ability to assist students and researchers of all kinds become the leaders and ground breakers of tomorrow.
