SPICE Professor L. Jean Camp Presents Research at Security and Human Behavior Conference

Professor L. Jean Camp, Director of the Security & Privacy in Informatics, Computing, and Engineering (SPICE) center at Indiana University, presented her research on risk communication to the 2018 Security & Human Behavior (SHB) conference. SHB focuses on the nexus between security and human behavior:

Security and Human Behavior brings together scholars interested in understanding security and human behavior. Discussing the issues ofand where security, psychological, and behavioral sciences interact is the goal of the workshop. Topics including misperception of risk, security usability, and decision making are all featured in SHB.

Professor L. Jean Camp is a leading researcher in usable security. Her paper “Instrumenting Simple Risk Communication for Safer Browsing” explores user understanding of security and risk while online. It investigates the use of a visual toolbar to increase user risk awareness while not demanding any particular action from the user. When the toolbar was implemented, the research found users were able to understand online risk more accurately and make choices that were safer.

IU Ph.D student, Jayati Dev, also attended the conference. She described it as a “very important” networking event for her. Stating that:

Not only was I excited and overwhelmed to meet important people in the field of human factors in security but I also learned a lot about the diverse range of people and work in our wonderful community.

SPICE is dedicated to concrete security solutions, research education, as well as outreach. Camp’s work with user notification toolbars to convey risk awareness brings solutions for a safe experience online. In supporting Jayati Dev with the opportunity to attend SHB, SPICE was both able to network with other researchers of diverse background working in security and human behavior as well as share the varied research the SPICE team is working on. As Dev said:

It was an enriching experience which opened up potential for future collaboration in my own work.

L. Jean Camp is a Professor at the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Her research focuses on the intersection of human and technical trust, leveraging economic models and human-centered design to create safe, secure systems. Her early contributions in the interdisciplines of economics of security, user-centered security, risk communication, and online trust underlie her applied research in the domains of IoT, authentication, secure networking, ecrime, public policy, ethics in computer science, and a few works on applied cryptography.
