SPICE attends Midwest Security Workshop 2018 with Keynote, Panel, and Group Speakers

The Security and Privacy in Informatics, Computing, and Engineering (SPICE) group attended, gave talks, and presented research at the Midwest Security Workshop 2018. Hosted by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the Midwest Security Workshop has the “goal of bringing together researchers in computer security and privacy from throughout the Midwestern United States.” Caravanning from the Bloomington campus, thirty four faculty members and graduate researchers from IU attended this year.

Keynote speaker, Professor XiaoFeng Wang  presented “System Security Research from Discovery to Innovation.” As he explained in his presentation:

I will share our experience in finding and understanding security weaknesses on the technology frontier, demonstrating how big questions can be asked to help discover subtle but fundamental security problems inside modern computing systems, and how such findings can reshape system security designs, bringing forth new techniques, new research directions.

Dr. Wang was not the only SPICE faculty to present at the event. Professor Ryan Henry participated in a panel discussion on Privacy Enhancing Technologies. Professor Apu Kadapia presented his lightning talks and workshop on IoT security challenging partipants to look at. While Post Doctorate Fellow Fattaneh Bayatbabolghani also presented a lightning talk on Privacy Enhancing Technologies.

Research posters were also presented by graduate researchers. Sanchari Das presented her poster “Beyond Blocking, Instrumenting Simple Risk Communications for Simple Browsing”. Taslima Akter presented “Challenges in Transitioning from Civil to Military Culture- Hyper-Selective Through ICT’s”. Tousif Ahmed presented “Enhancing Privacy, Security, and Safety for People with Visual Impairment Using Wearable Cameras”.

SPICE’s dedication to interdisciplinary and fundamental research in the field of security and privacy in informatics and computing is well reflected in our efforts to support and participate in great conferences like the Midwest Security Conference.
